Every rug begins on an azetta.
That's the Tamazight word for the upright loom Amazigh women have woven on for generations. Two wooden beams, a frame of wool threads, and weeks of patient work, knot by knot.
Why we started.
Boho first came to the Atlas in 2018 and left with a rug rolled under one arm. Back home, friends kept asking where to find one. The honest answer was hard: most rugs sold online passed through three or four middlemen, arrived with a customs bill, or weren't handmade at all.
So we started buying directly from the weavers we'd met, paying them fairly and up front, and shipping each rug ourselves with the duties already paid. We still visit every season, and we still unroll every rug by hand to photograph it.
From sheep to your floor.
Seven steps, most of them by hand, over two to four months.
-
01Shearing and washing Sheep are sheared in spring. The fleece is washed in river water and dried in the sun.
-
02Spinning Wool is carded and spun by hand on a drop spindle into yarn of uneven, lively thickness.
-
03Dyeing Yarn is dyed in small batches, often with plants and minerals, so every lot is a little different.
-
04Weaving On the azetta, the weaver ties each knot by hand, row by row, for weeks or months.
-
05Washing and drying The finished rug is washed to soften the wool and set the colors, then sun-dried.
-
06Measuring and photographing We measure every rug by hand and photograph it in daylight, front and back.
-
07Shipping to you Rolled, wrapped and sent with duties paid. It reaches your door in 4–7 business days.
